Re: First Deer Collision
Don't know what happened to the deer-he got a pretty good jolt but we had to drive a little further to where there was a place to stop so we could check how the front of the car looked. Regards, LenJohn F wrote:Where's the photo of the deer?

Re: First Deer Collision
This will seem like a weird story only to people who don't live in the remote country. Everybody where I live faces this possibility on a daily basis. The white-tailed deer is a beautiful animal, but it is also vermin.
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

But we didn't bother looking for the injured deer.lennygoran wrote:Don't know what happened to the deer-he got a pretty good jolt but we had to drive a little further to where there was a place to stop so we could check how the front of the car looked. Re: First Deer Collision
My day wasn't ruined--a lovely retirement dinner and the Belmar boardwalk yesterday was great too-- -sorry about the whole incident but I don't think anything could be accomplished by me looking around for the deer. There's a lot of road kill found out here in the NJ boondocks. Regards, LenChalkperson wrote:I love how only your day was ruined, that deer is miserable too.
Re: First Deer Collision
Bambi as vermin?! Deer were on this continent long before humans were, as Chalkie says, and when their paths cross ours, they have the right of way. After all, it was Len who hit the deer and not the other way around.

Re: First Deer Collision
I'd have to say we each hit each other-he darted out of nowhere on to my path and I was driving right into his path-it was unfortunate. I had never had this happen before but after researching it I now know what to do.John F wrote: After all, it was Len who hit the deer and not the other way around.

PS-it reminds me of when a number of us didn't know it was the law to move over into another lane when you see a police car with someone getting a ticket on an interstate over on the shoulder.

Re: First Deer Collision
I have posted on this before. You live in Brooklyn and simply don't know what we are talking about. There are more deer in the rural parts of the Northeast than there were before the European settlement. The problem is the loss of predators, mainly wolves. The population has to be culled by hunting, and the laws with regard to that are antiquated. Deer feed on private gardens, carry the ticks that cause Lyme disease, and routinely interfere with rural traffic. It is entirely wrong that Len is responsible for this encounter. Instead he is to be pitied for being the next victim. My day will come for sure.John F wrote:Bambi as vermin?! Re: First Deer Collision
I'd say it was an unfortunate encounter-I don't know how the deer made out-next time and I truly hope there isn't a next time I'll call the police-hope the deer was able to rebound and make it back into the woods-meantime we brought the car to a trusted collision mechanic and even without a total cosmetic clean up it will cost us $400 to fix a headlight that works but where under the hood you can see there's a crack which could eventually spread and crack completely. Well $400 is better than when we put the fence around our entire garden over 20 years ago-that was $6000 but it does keep the deer away from our plants! Re: First Deer Collision
Len, first of all, glad you're OK. As for the car, as I'm sure you realize, it could have been a lot worse. So far, I've been lucky and avoided any deer collisions, but my son was unlucky several years ago--his encounter with a deer in the early morning hours in Bucks County, Pennsylvania resulted in a total loss of his car (but no injuries to him and his passengers).lennygoran wrote:I'd say it was an unfortunate encounter-I don't know how the deer made out-next time and I truly hope there isn't a next time I'll call the police-hope the deer was able to rebound and make it back into the woods-meantime we brought the car to a trusted collision mechanic and even without a total cosmetic clean up it will cost us $400 to fix a headlight that works but where under the hood you can see there's a crack which could eventually spread and crack completely. Re: First Deer Collision
Henry thanks for your thoughts-yeah we got off very lucky! We are in Bucks county so much-we love it--it's amazing how quickly costs to repair collisions can sky rocket-we had a Ford Escort that needed so much collision cosmetic repair the insurance agent told us the car was totaled even though it still was drivable-gave us a check for the book value but we had to go buy a new car. Our major concern now is making sure the present car is ready for our upcoming upstate trips to Bard and Glimmerglass--we're not at all concerned about a few cosmetic scratches that will remain on the car but we want the headlight in perfect operating order!
