David McCullough & the Northwest Territory

Post by jserraglio » Sat May 27, 2017 10:08 am

McCullough tells how in tracking down the life of Rev. Manasseh Cutler of Yale College for a commencement address he delivered there, he stumbled upon a rich trove of letters, diaries, illustrations, etc. at the Marietta College Library in SE Ohio. He tells how he decided that he would write a book about the first settlers of the vast, lush Territory Northwest of the River Ohio (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, most of Ohio and SE Minnesota). This Northwest Territory was to be free of slavery and offer free education to all. McCullough's book, The Pioneers is due out in 2019.
