Moving to NYC...!

Well, big changes happening out here! Not only have I quit composing this year, but I've also decided to quit my job and move to NYC. I've been itching to do something drastic for a while now, and everything came together for me to get a fresh start. I mean...how often does that opportunity actually present itself in life? So I jumped at it.

No idea what I'll be doing yet, but I'm sending out job applications left and right. Anyone hiring?

Chalkie, need an assistant?

JohnF, have any old publishing connections I can use?

Len, I have gardening experience!

Anyway, since a portion of y'all live out there, thought I'd let y'all know!

Well, well! I hope it works out well for you. Unfortunately I no longer have any connections in publishing; everybody I knew is retired or dead, and the business has changed a lot in the 30 years since I left it. But if I can help, I'd be glad to try.

Yeah, 98% certain going to end up in Manhattan. Almost all nonprofits are based there, and my ladyfriend is an actress, so all of her gigs are there as well. Of course, it's ungodly expensive, but we'll make something work. Maybe Harlem? That's where she is now.

Even if you work in Manhattan, you don't need to live there. I've lived in Brooklyn for 45 years and always relied on the subway to get me to work. Mostly it's been no problem.

Jersey City is another possibility because of PATH.

The problem with that is, the last PATH to New Jersey leaves Manhattan before 11:30 pm, and many Metropolitan Opera performances run to nearly midnight. (Len Goran knows more about these options than I do.) Most if not all of New York's subways run 24/7/365 and some buses run late too.

I would board buses in Manhattan at 2 AM and have to stand. Walk to GC Station and take a train to a job in Tarrytown. And the subways could get me about anywhere in between. Intriguing transit system.

Surprised by what you say about the buses-we use the buses quite a bit and late evening they`re usually pretty empty-the wait for them can be long. Len

Long ago. I was not at all annoyed by standing on buses. Manhattan electrifying and cheap to live in back when. People mainly open-minded and tolerant.

Don`t get me wrong-we stand on many buses during the day but not so late evening. NYC is still incredibly vibrant-unfortunately not cheap. Len

Worth every penny. The most exhilarating place I've ever lived. Loved it. Two towers framed by my living room window. At first, folks would show me where to go. Warm. Incredibly diverse: not snobbish, not insular, not Boston.

Yeah, from what I understand, Brooklyn and Queens have some convenient locations, so we'll look into them. The ladyfriend has lived in all three of these boroughs and prefers Manhattan, so we'll target that area first. And it looks like we'll be willing to pay a little (lot?) more to be as close to the action as possible.

I have a friend in Stony Creek, a retired gentleman somewhat my elder who had a career as a truck driver, who owned a condo in lower Manhattan and used to spend his summers up here as many do. Perhaps ten years ago he sold the condo, an act of complete lunacy in my mind, because to own any kind of residence in Manhattan is a pearl without price. I've never been able to get him to tell me why he made this decision, but I suppose he had priorities other than living in what Ralph Stein used to call the center of the universe.

Well, it's finally happened! I'm the new Associate Director of Annual Fund Programs at Columbia University! Woohoo! Still working out a start date, but it's possible that I'll be moving to NYC this month. Looking forward to the next meetup.

Congratulations, Garrett,It sounds as though you have proved yourself as qualified for a very responsible job, not to mention that, unlike say teaching at a private prep school (something I tried for once), they are not likely to expect anyone to hold it without paying him enough to live in NYC.

I too look forward to a meet-up including you (and all sorts of others of course). I'm overdue or a NYC visit. Of course, I'm always overdue for a NYC visit. Our first meet-up, which I missed because of illness,took place in February, but I think the group just got lucky. Much better IMO to wait until spring.

Haha, yeah. Thankfully (?) I grew up in Detroit and the rest of my family now lives in Chicago, so I at least know what to expect. But that doesn't mean I need to like them!

The last few winters here in NYC have been pretty mild, with most of the snowstorms making a detour around us. We may have another such winter; well into December, the forecast for the next couple of days is high temperatures in the 40s. It's not LA by any means, but it's not Michigan either!

If you come to the performing arts library at Lincoln Center tomorrow after 3:30, next to the Met, you'll find me at the Welcome Desk just inside the main entrance - and you'll also find remarkable exhibitions about Leonard Bernstein, Arturo Toscanini, and recorded sound preservation and restoration.

Every Monday from 4:30 to about 8pm, except when the library is closed for a holiday, and every Friday from 3:30 to 6pm.

John so glad I had a chance to see this show-I didn't have time to do it full justice but the 40 minutes I did give it were quite wonderful. And of course great to see you! Regards, Len
