I was working at W.W. Norton when we published "Helter Skelter" by Vince Bugliosi, the prosecutor in the Manson "family's" trial for murder. It was a huge best-seller, probably Norton's most successful trade book. Somehow I had missed the news reports of the murders themselves, as I was on the road as Norton's sales rep in the Plains States. But of course I read the book, and the story gave me the chills. It still does.
The Times story mentions that Manson was actually the subject of an opera by John Moran, "The Manson Family" (1990). I didn't know about that either, and apparently it has sunk without a trace. Why have Peter Sellars and John Adams not done one of their CNN operas about him?

The first time I did Academic Bowl, I was only a community volunteer reader. There was a question to which the answer was Charles Manson, but the student replied "Charlie Manson," an answer I accepted. However, I added "I see you're on a first-name basis," which got a huge laugh.
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

It's not too late. Now you've given them the hint....
