Academic Bowl over

Post by jbuck919 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 12:56 am

My last appearance ever went without a hitch. It is time to pass the torch, cast my mantle, whatever metaphor you choose. I am filled with a sense of accomplishment but also a sense of exhaustion. BTW, Lake George won, as was expected. I have seen an unusually high level of play all season, but rarely around here have I seen a game as splendidly played as the championship game. There are 81 questions in a game, and only two went unanswered.

Incidentally, venturing in this direction for the first time, I wrote a bonus category called "Opera, and don't be afraid" (which got a big laugh). However, I worded the questions so that they could be answered without knowing much about opera. For instance, Carmen takes place in Seville, which is in what country?

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Congratulations-also some day Carmen may not take place in Seville if certain wild directors decide to stage it elsewhere! Regards, Len

The Lake George coach is eight months along. Nationals in Washington DC don't happen until May, but she may very well want to take advantage of extended maternity leave, which is still relatively generous in upstate New York. She has already asked another volunteer if she would be willing to replace her, and said volunteer said no, for a reason I will not go into but which does not apply to me. What the LG coach does not realize is that I no longer have the need to be impartial and can commit myself to any team, that though she has been lucky with her excellent team, I am greatly her superior as an experienced coach, and that I lived in the DC area for 25 years. All expenses would be paid if I volunteered. So why don't I just step up? So as not to borrow trouble at my age. Let them ask first, though they won't.
