Baidu

Post by John F » Sun Jul 15, 2018 6:27 am

This morning, at the bottom of CMG's home page, I found "Baidu [Spider]" among the registered users. In internet jargon, a spider is software that roams the Web and accumulates data for a search engine. We all know Google, and some know Microsoft's search engine Bing, but what is Baidu? According to Wikipedia, the second largest search engine in the world. Why don't we know it? Because it's in China.
Wikipedia wrote:Baidu, Inc. ... is a Chinese multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products, and artificial intelligence... It is one of the largest AI and internet companies in the world.

This is one of the foreign companies that our Peerless Leader hopes to beat in his trade war. Lots of luck with that.

I recently read an article (maybe in the peerless WSJ?) about how China spies on its own citizens with a couple hundred million surveillance cameras now, with 3/4 of a billion to be installed by 2020. The govt publicizes them to the public to make them believe they are even better at surveillance than they really are and keep them in line. According to the article, China invests far more into artificial intelligence than we do, especially cameras equipped with facial recognition systems, in part to enhance their ability to keep tabs on their restive population.

I just found the original WSJ print article in video form. The original article on facial recognition is behind a paywall:

This video mentions Baidu:
