The first man to climb Mt. Everest

Post by jbuck919 » Mon Aug 06, 2018 5:46 am

This almost inconceivable accomplishment which is now littered with dead bodies etc. and a hstory of numerous people who have more or less done the climb was made by the man who is featured at the beginning of this episode of What's My Line. He does acknowledge that he was joined by his Sherpa comrade Tenzing Norgay, and what is little known is that he paid regular visits to him for many years.

Now here is your trivia question of the day. Who was the first known person to climb a mountain just for the sake of doing so? Hint: He is a famous poet. You are not going to find this on Google.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I couldn't see your link here at all (this happens frequently). You would be talking about the New Zealander Edmund Hillary. He visited our catholic school in the 1960s and I had the opportunity to meet him. He stood well over 6 feet, if I remember correctly.

Yes of course I mean Hillary, and am sorry that you cannot get the link. How lucky you are to have met him. For decades he was credited as the first to reach the crest, when he himself acknowledged that it was a co-op with Tenzing Norgay. Pure racism.

As for my trivia question, the first person known to climb a mountain for its own sake was the poet Petrarch.
