Len, for years and years I have run the free Awesome Duplicate Remover without any problems. I have never had to reload it or update it, and it is awesome in its ability to find duplicate photos, of which I have many thousands that I would never have a need to bring up here. Just pull and drag your photo file to their active page, and let the program do the rest for you, though you do have to decide case-by-case which ones actually to delete.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

John a followup-this didn't download either-the same annoying message-I decided to google about the service did not respond in a timely fashion-the microsoft page came up-way too complicated for me so I will talk to someone from microsoft-an appointment was made for 2:45 today. Regards, Len

You receive an "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" error message when a service that uses the local system account tries to start on a Windows Server 2003-based computer
Applies to: Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Hotfix Download Available
Symptoms
Services that use the local system account to log on to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer do not start. By default, services such as the following use the local system account to log on:

World Wide Web Publishing Service
Microsoft Windows Installer
Microsoft Windows Management Instrumentation

After such a service tries to start, you receive the following error message:

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
Note Typically, this error message does not appear until after a 30-second time-out.

After an indeterminate time after you restart your computer, services that are running under the local system account fail to start. For example, after a period of 12 hours to 5 days, a service such as Windows Installer fails to start. In this case, the error message is returned immediately instead of after the usual 30-second time-out.

You may also receive the following error message:
DLL Initialization failure (0xc0000142)
Cause
This problem occurs because the Iisutil.dll DLL adds an access control entry (ACE) to the desktop security descriptor for the services that run in the system context. The ACE lets the Microsoft Internet Information Services Worker Process Group (IIS_WPG) account log on to the system service desktop. However, if another process sets the desktop security descriptor for the services that run in the system context to a null value, Iisutil.dll changes the discretionary access control list (DACL). Iisutil.dll changes the DACL list so that any service that uses the noninteractive local system account cannot log on.

Note The noninteractive local system account is the local system account that does not use the Allow service to interact with desktop option. For additional information about this option, see the "More Information" section.

Note A null value security descriptor grants unrestricted access.

As far as I can make out from all that verbiage, you may be able to do the download right after you reboot your computer. Seems like a problem with Microsoft's server software, not your Windows.

John wow! I always go to mozilla after opening up the computer-I guess I was allowed to download the application but to actually install the program your suggestion worked-none of the apps were allowed to be installed while I was on/line but when I went to my downloads after just opening my computer I was able to run the app! I'm amazed and so was Sue. Anyway I installed the trial run of Duplicate cleaner-that allows only 100 duplicates found to be removed-as the following photos show I had many more. I bought the pro version-I hope its worth the $25. Thank you so much!

You had over 62,000 duplicate files? Wow! I guess you really needed that program. :)

John yes-for a few weeks I had tried to remove the dups, trples, quads manually one at a time but realized it would take forever-it was only 2 days ago I thought that maybe there might be programs to remove them. I still wonder why with Mozilla running I was allowed to download the app but couldn't install the program until I left the internet following your advice. Now I'm back on Mozilla and hope I can use the program for file removal to take a look at my documents-I've noticed I have extra material in that large file. Regards, Len

By "Mozilla" you mean Firefox, right? Mozilla is the non-profit corporation that makes Firefox and other software. Kind of like saying Microsoft when you mean Windows.

Yes Firefox-btw today it's getting along perfectly with the duplicate scanner-right now I'm deleting over 102000 documents-I do notice that this ongoing deletion is slowing the browser a little but not that seriously. I'm sure my external hard drives also have a lot of these duplicates but I'm not going to attempt to use this program on them-it could take hours for it to do its job and the external hard drives can get hot. The external hard drives have plenty of room on them so I'll just leave them alone. Regards, Len
