How exciting-we've done some bird watching over the years and have gotten close at several National wildlife Refuges-places like Blackwater in Cambridge, Maryland and Forsythe in NJ. Regards, Len

Checked further.Apparently hatching starts about 38 days from date laid and can take up to 24 hours to finish.

One more egg to go in this nest. Expected hatching anytime 4/2 - 4/6. It's my understanding another egg unfortunately broke in March.

Nice close-ups of DM2 and a glimpse of the eggs! Note that there appears to be something stuck to one of them. My best guess is a down feather. The oldest egg would be 33 days old today – a little early for hatch! "

"One of the eggs broke on March 11. Based on color, it was one of the first two. We suspect but don’t know for sure that it was the first one.The first eaglet to hatch this year will be D32. We’re going to start hatch watch on March 31 this year! "

Clarification :

There are 2 nests. In one, there were 2 eggs, both hatched, one eaglet then died, other eaglet seems to be doing well.

In the other nest, there were 3 eggs, one broke somehow, waiting for the other 2 to hatch any day now.More info, and I believe the camera only on this nest, at above link.

Lucked out about 30 mins.ago, got to see Mom pull pieces off the dead fish in the nest and feed to the surviving eaglet in that ( North ) nest ; no birth yet in the other nest.

Belle thanks-I love watching eagles when we've been out bird watching! Ospreys and hawks too but the ospreys are more common to see! Regards, Len

Absolutely adorable!! Have been looking at the Decorah site to watch the progress on the hatchings. Sent them on to grandchildren.

2nd egg hatched in this nest last night, now have 2 eaglets. 3rd ,final, egg broke in March.Can see both right now.BUT views change quickly.

1 egg hatched in this other nest, have 1 eaglet there. 2nd egg hatched earlier, but eaglet died.Can see live one right now.Mom just left for awhile, perhaps to get a fish from the nearby State fish hatchery.

Long way to go for all , yet. You can monitor progress at these links, if interested. I’ll not post further. Interesting factoid per the site : the female is usually the larger, to facilitate nest-sitting and appear more fearsome to potential nest predators ; the male smaller to facilitate ease in flying, hunting. So, size matters with eagles !

I've been monitoring these nets and the weather is absolutely freezing cold at the moment and, I should think, very stressful for these eagles and their chicks. Is it usual to have the weather this cold going into spring? Those winds are strong enough to blow mothers off the nests.

In Australia we have an expression about severe winds..."strong enough to blow a dog off a chain"!

Not usual for that part of Iowa, but not rare,either.Weather to be similar for about another 5 days, so keep fingers crossed for them.

That northern eagle looks freezing cold; the Decorah eagle isn't dealing with the snow, at least. The depredations of life for all of us, animals and humans alike!!

I'm sorry, "Decorah North Eagles" is from near Decorah,Iowa, but not is same area as "Decorah Eagles."

"The Decorah North eagles are nesting on private property north of Decorah. Their very large nest is located in a white oak tree in a scrap of forest bordering a valley and an excellent stream is located just across a field where cattle are pastured. In general, they begin courtship in October, productive mating in late January or early February, and egg-laying in mid to late February. Hatching usually begins in late March to early April, and the eaglets fledge in mid-to-late June. While young usually disperse between August and October, the adults remain on territory year round."

"Decorah Eagles " are at the State Fish Hatchery near Decorah:
" The Decorah eagles are nesting near the Decorah Trout Hatchery, located at 2325 Siewers Spring Rd in Decorah, IA. The female is known as Mom and the male is known as DM2 (for the second Decorah male eagle). In general, they begin courtship in October, productive mating in late January or early February, and egg-laying in mid to late February. Hatching usually begins in late March to early April, and the eaglets fledge in mid-to-late June. While young usually disperse between August and October, the adults remain on territory year round. I had already looked up Decorah on Google maps and located the general area - but was without a clue about the 'North' eagles. Thanks. I imagine it's fairly cold there during winter and fall. One of our closest friends comes from Duluth, Minnesota, and he talked about the spray from the great lakes freezing mid-air when hitting the rocks in winter. And there was me complaining about the European cold when we holidayed together in Austria!

There would have been two or three - 30F. ( approx. - 48C. ) actual air temp days this February,even colder " wind chill " temp, in Decorah, but thankfully that was unusual !

I've never been in that kind of weather; the coldest being about minus 3 or 4 in Austria and I was terrified and had to rush into Starbucks after just 10 minutes on the street!! It was seriously fear-inducing being worried about not being able to get warm very quickly, even with thermal clothing. When we arrived in Austria we had just left our Australian summer (40 degrees C) and I observed to my husband, "I feel like I'm in the freezer at Woolworths, alongside the peas and beans"!

How do the eagles manage in the HOT weather with all that feathering? I imagine it can turn warm rather quickly too.

Usual mid to late Summer temps in Decorah will range 27C to 35C , with a few days is some years at or slightly above 38C ( 80F. - 100F. ). The birds hopefully have benefit of cooling breezes as they are up in the trees, not at ground, and the benefit of shade from the tree leaves.

I wonder how long it will be before they leave the nest and what prevents them from falling over the side, out of the nest??
