Summary of what was lost. It's sickening to contemplate, if you love more than classical music.

For what it's worth, almost meaningless really, is that the US Labels only received "Copy Masters" from the Bands and Record Companies, I know, I carried then here to the US many times in the 70's and 80's.

This is AMERICA'S musical heritage, and that's a tragedy, because Americans INVENTED this music.

This is true and also a reminder of what's been lost in art music through fires down the centuries.

Chuck Berry was the god of music in the circles I moved in as a kid, along with Little Richard. Back then in White America, rock-n-roll was considered the music of "juvenile delinquents", and us 'JDs' were made to pay the price in ostracism by adults and most of our peers.

I saw Duke Ellington live and heard B.B. King open for and upstage the Stones in Boston. The thought that any of Ellington's or King's original masters (or Trane's, or Aretha's) have been lost couldn't be more upsetting.

Our resident Ethnomusicologist in our music group says exactly as you do!! He would enjoy these comments.

I had a different experience and found myself 'ostracized' in my cohort because of my love for serious music. The abuse was consistent.

I certainly know what you mean, but in another sense music couldn't be more serious than what is found in gospel, as I found out one morning when the Swan Silvertones came on the radio singing "My Rock." Same label as Little Richard's (Specialty Records). That one record instantly made me into a gospel fan. Hope those masters didn't burn!

I guess I was trying to avoid the term 'art music' which seems to get up peoples' noses. And I agree with you about 'seriousness' per se in other musics. Yes, of course.
