Any relationship between those deaths and this pornographic violence?

Only the other way around - violent movies sell in America because this is a violent society and a gun culture. If there's a single gunshot in any film by Bergman, Fellini, or Truffaut, I don't remember it, though doubtless someone here will.

It's a chicken and egg equation though, isn't it. I don't know of any guns in those films you mention, either, but there must be a happy medium between the neurotic self-absorption of some Swedish film and the gun-toting violence of American cinema. There have been many many wonderful films without guns and some funny ones with guns (Woody Allen, "Take the Money and Run"). However, jokes about violence are always going to go way above the heads of those who think guns and fists are the answer. (If they're the answer, what is the question?)

If we're talking about cause and effect, I don't think so. There have been studies about this kind of thing and they don't bear out the easy popular notion that what people see in fictional entertainments, they then go out and copy in real life. Sure, it sometimes happens, but not as a general rule. What's more likely to motivate copycat massacres is real-life massacres and the publicity they get through news reporting, and more generally, as I said, the American gun culture.

Also alarming is how our current president fails to strongly call out white supremacists-what if someone who wanted more positive action in our Senate was speaking at a Democratic rally and encouraged and gloated over Mitch McConnell's shoulder fracture with the crowd cheering and the Dem speaking waiting 15 seconds before letting forth with a smug "Too Bad.! Regards, Len :(

The question not asked so far - Is this an issue stemming from potentially untreated mental health patients?

My wife and I disagreed about this. She felt Trump couldn't be blamed for the El Paso massacre, in which strictly speaking she is right. But he has helped legitimise and popularise racism and violence in the most despicable way, with a nod and wink, then denying it, and then repeating it. He is most assuredly a significant contributor to a long-standing and vicious problem in American society.

The atmosphere has become so toxic that Donald's enemies intend to marry him, and Mitch, to these latest shootings.

As for the mental illness of shooters, that's just the mantra intoned by gun advocates, followed by blaming social media and video games, to divert and delay till the next news cycle.

I saw a pithy cartoon - not sure where, think it might have been The Australian newspaper - which I thought summed it up pretty well. Bleeding bodies lay littered around, while Uncle Sam shielded a man saying "It's OK, you're safe now." The sheltered man wore a label: NRA.
