Cast Away: skates or soccer ball?

Imagine the lead character without the skates! They serve as a mirror, tooth extractor, wood cutter and rope maker. Without the skates, he can't leave that island.

Imagine the lead character without the soccer ball! It's the life-saving companion, the symbol of loyalty, the source of sanity, the reason why he articulates and thus conceives a solution.

Then, why is the soccer ball given precedence over the skates? Why is it the best supporting actor in that movie? :lol:
