For we music buffs, I've recently seen two remarkable movies from Europe.
Vitus, from Germany, about a brilliant young musician, and..
The Page Turner, from France, about a very disturbed pianist.
Trust me on these. I don't want to reveal the stories, but I was fascinated by these excellent films.

Re: Two amazing flicks
Harris, I've heard about The Page Turner but not about Vitus. Does the latter have English titles?

The Vitus film is from Germany and does have sub-titles.
Trust me on both of these, Lance.
I'd be amazed if you weren't impressed .

I agree--it's a wonderful movie. The boy who plays the piano genius in Vitus actually plays the piano parts in the movies. He's won a few youth competitions. Be sure to watch the extras, including an interview with him and his audition. It's amazing how effortlessly he switches between English and German.

I'm in the middle of Vitus and enjoying it. I just got to the part where the mother tells the school administrator that she can speak Swiss German, which answered the question about non-standard German that had been driving me crazy.
[SPOILER HERE ABOUT THE PAGE TURNER]
I did recently see The Page Turner and was terribly disappointed that what could have been a complex psychological drama deteriorated into a standard sociopath revenge plot. Also, of all pieces for a pianist to break down technically, or to be an audition piece for a piano trio in the fist place, the Schubert Notturno? Heck, I can play that.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
