Movies based on Bach?

Here's the place to talk about DVDs (or VHS) films and movies you have seen on television and recommend or don't recommend. Discuss actors and scores, too.

Movies based on Bach?

Post by Guitarist » Tue Mar 23, 2010 12:40 pm

I know a lot of movies have been based on the lives of Beethoven, Liszt, and perhaps Wagner, but have any been based on Bach's life?

A new one by Catalan director Pere Portabella was a delight to watch earlier this year: Die Stille vor Bach.

It's been on my Netflix list as "availability unknown" (meaning not yet released on DVD) for many months.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

There is a mid 1960´s black-and-white movie with the very thin and then young Gustav Leonhardt as J. S. Bach himself. Can´t remember the name but it was something like: The Chronicles of Anna Magdalena Bach...if I´m not mistaken.
There is not much acting from Leonhardt, most of the movie he is playing the cembalo...a rather strange but interesting movie.

We saw it on the silver screen in the MFA auditorium . . . and I think I read somewhere that the director doesn't like the idea of his work being distributed for home small-screen viewing. But I do hope this makes it to DVD, I'd buy one : )
