Leslie Nielsen: Naked Gun: Police Squad

Here's the place to talk about DVDs (or VHS) films and movies you have seen on television and recommend or don't recommend. Discuss actors and scores, too.

Leslie Nielsen: Naked Gun: Police Squad

Where have I been all this time? TCM presented The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad the other night. This stars Leslie Nielsen. I cannot recall when I have laughed so much over a movie. Just when you think this has a serious moment, something takes place that makes one just roar ... for example, Nielsen on the ledge of a building grabbing at a statue so as to not fall off! As the blurb on the Paramount release [13842] says: “Leslie Nielsen stars as Police Squad's own granite-jawed, rockbrained cop, Frank Drebin, who bumbles across a mind control scheme to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley, O. J. Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams, and an odd assortment of others join the wacko goings-on and blow the laugh-o-meter to smithereens.”

The story is by Jerry and David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Pat Proft. David Zucker is the director and Robert K. Weiss, producer.

Tell me, is the whole series of these Leslie Nielsen flicks as good as this one? What other wones do you recommend?

You had not seen it? I chuckle through all of them. You will, too.
some fun scenes in the series - chalk line in the water where a guy fell off the boat, drebin and co-worker in a sex shop, drebin rubbing off gorbachev's birth mark, the dash cam views from the police car at the opening credits...

Lance,

I have not seen the film in years, but I recall it being quite funny. Now I want to watch it again. :)

I believe the two sequels were both enjoyable, but not as funny as the first.

Don't ask me--I keep a straight face thru the efforts of Nielsen & the Zuker Bros.

I searched for some Naked Gun material on Youtube and watched the bit where Nordberg (O. J. Simpson) walks into the bad guys lair and all manner of hilarity ensues. The scene is ridiculous and unlikely to ever happen, but even after all these years I still find it funny.

Listen, there're certain things in life at which I just can't laugh. Like, for instance, when animator Chuck Jones tried his hand in the 60s at the Tom & Jerry series. Jones made excrement out of the series that Fred Quimby and Hanna-Barbera honed to perfection at MGM in the 40s & 50s. If you grew up watching strictly the older series, you'll find Jones's cartoons (great as he was at Warner Bros.) exceedingly dedicated to not entertaining the viewer. :x
