The old movie serials

Here's the place to talk about DVDs (or VHS) films and movies you have seen on television and recommend or don't recommend. Discuss actors and scores, too.

The old movie serials

Post by smitty1931 » Sat Aug 06, 2011 5:05 pm

I remember fondly the serials of the early 40s. Now that most of them are available on DVD, upon reseeing them the magic is gone. It would be fun to step back in time to 1943 and sit in the Atlas Theatre for a matinee of two movies, a cartoon, the news, previews and a chapter of The Haunted Harbor or The Mysterious Dr Satan all for 10 cents. Hi yo Silver...away!

I remember some of the science fiction/fantasy serials because they were widely broadcast in NYC television in the 1960s. And I must say, that they were gripping entertainment to a young child as fantasy. As SF, I think I knew by the age of eight that you need an oxygen supply to breathe in space and that ordinary rocket ships cannot travel from one planet to the next in a matter of minutes.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
