The American cinematographer Gordon Willis, known as the "Prince of Darkness", has died. My favourite film of his - in fact, one of my all-time favourite films - was "All the President's Men". A fabulous film, particularly the end shot of the teleprinter itemizing the events leading to the destruction of the Nixon Presidency, with guns from the inauguration sounding, and which ends on a freeze frame. The previous shot reveals the presidential inauguration taking place on a TV screen inside the offices of "The Washington Post"; in the foreground the journalists are hard at work on their typewriters. This end scene is a powerful example of the effect of sound in film used to create tension and heighten dramatic irony. ... 201185649/
