"Force of Evil" is John Garfield's finest film in his relatively short life and career. This noir is beautifully shot by pioneer cinematographer George Barnes; it looks and sounds good, with Garfield in his typically intense, yet also vulnerable, portrayal of a man caught up in the 'numbers racket'. Garfield's other excellent films were "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "He Ran all the Way" (his last).
Here is a picture of Barnes from the set of "Force of Evil", seen at the middle rear of camera, behind Garfield.
"Force of Evil" is testament to the quality of many of the films which encompassed the genre of 'pure' film noir, most of which spoke to the 'mean streets' after the Depression and the consequences of explosive urbanization.
