Here's the place to talk about DVDs (or VHS) films and movies you have seen on television and recommend or don't recommend. Discuss actors and scores, too.

Out of Africa

Is there a more exquisite opening scene than in this film - after the preliminaries about Karen Blixen in Denmark - when the train carrying her to her farm in Africa is moving along through the countryside and John Barry's score swells over it all?

Music and cinematography unparalleled.

(Also - listen to Barry's main theme from a relatively unknown movie - Hanover Street: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufj-7-JK6j8)

Completely agree!! The music of John Barry and the exquisite cinematography of John Watkin...a perfect synthesis, preparing us for a great big canvas. I love this film though I didn't like the character of Denys Finch-Hatton. Redford is a cold actor and he was just right for this part. Streep is absolutely phenomenal, as usual.

The opening credits sequence is magic, as is this;

I showed this scene to my students one year just before Christmas, when academic work has dropped off prior to the 6 week holiday season. It was a course of my own making, "Film Appreciation". They were absolutely gobsmacked!!
