A science writer I can recommend

With great enthusiasm: Paul Davies.

His 1983 book God and the New Physics has stayed in my mind all these years as a significant contribution to my non-scientist scientific education). I just finished his recent book, The Eerie Silence, whose main topic is SETI, but which discourses richly on many other areas of interest for those who want their thinking about the possibilities for life elsewhere constructively debunked.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
-- Johann Sebastian Bach
