I've read all three of the novels by this terrific writer: The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and his latest book, And The Mountains Echoed. All of the main characters are or have been residents of Afghanistan.

By now I guess most book-lovers have either read, or at least heard of, Hosseini's first novel (The Kite Runner). This wonderfully told story of guilt and the need for redemption marked the author as eminently successful in portraying the depth of human emotion ---- making readers feel it in their hearts and minds. [Darn! I wish I could express myself better]

A Thousand Splendid Suns was good, but somehow not as compelling for me.

With And The Mountains Echoed, Hosseini has come back better than ever!!! The characters are beautifully drawn --- real human beings seem to spring from the pages. Rarely, if ever, do I weep when reading a book, but this one was so full of bittersweet truths, that I couldn't help myself.

You expressed yourself just fine. No one expects a comment on the level of the New York Review of Books here, and I daresay none of us is likely very often to produce one.

I don't keep up with fiction, but you've made me aware of something I should at least know about in terms of cultural literacy. I only know about Stieg Larsson the same way, though someone gave me the Dragon Tattoo book because I said I liked P.D. James.
