Just finished reading Morrison's second novel, Sula (1973), 174 pp of allusive prose (looking backward to the Bible & Homer, to Hawthorne & Poe, to Joyce, Woolf & Achebe and forward to August Wilson) and one of the most profound explorations of symbiotic friendship I have ever read. It pays tribute to but also critiques the culture of the fictional Ohio river town of Medallion, a lost Eden eaten up by an ever-encroaching urban/suburban wasteland: laying bare metaphorically the source of Demon Trump's demagogic power over those fated in our time to reside in the land of Nod.

In every way this novel struck me as a poetic blend of sensuality and confusion. If this little book is any indication of what she was to achieve in the more expansive and celebrated works that followed, Morrison deserved her Nobel Prize several times over.
