A Farewell to Arms / The Naked & the Dead

Re-reading the latest scholarly version on Kindle. A Farewell to Arms is the greatest war novel I know, never having had the patience to read War & Peace.

Also re-reading Mailer's The Naked and the Dead which is very very good except that the mindless censorship of the postwar era dictated that all the venerable Old English 'f-bombs' had to be expunged and replaced by the barbarism fugging. In my view, by doing that Mailer's publisher was able to outdo the author himself in vulgarity.
