Continued Board Vulnerability

Post by Ralph » Fri Mar 25, 2005 5:08 pm

Below is an e-mail from a close friend who is a computer expert employed in software security design and web creation. He knows his business - I described what happened here and asked about the likelihood of a repetition, giving him the URL.

Here's his response:

You wanted to know how easy it was for someone to hack your discussion group.
About 1 minute (half to look at the discussion and find out what application you were using and half to search google for a hack)

This was published online about a week ago. Once you read the step by step instructions, you'll be able to hack the board yourself.

If the webmaster didn't fix the application, the hacker (or another one) will hack you again, probably not before long.

I got similar information from the best guru at school. There is actually online-downloadable softare that permits hacking. This site just isn't important enough for the kind of encryption needed for serious security.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I disagree!!

This site certainly IS important enough for the encrytion needed for serious security. Don't you really mean that such encryption security is TOO EXPENSIVE??

Well, obviously, it's important enough to us. I simply meant that this is not the site from which nuclear missiles could be launched. And I suppose, though I do not know, that it does boil down to a matter of expense.

BTW, hasn't anyone here heard of tinyurl? If it's made available as part of the formatting (or if people go to the tinyurl website) we won't have to scroll across the page to read posts.
