A scandal below the radar

Doug MacEachern
Arizona Republic columnist
Aug. 5, 2005 12:00 AM

Especially in media hothouses like New York City, issues develop fast. Usually.

One amazing New York-centric story, however, has been rumbling along the last week or so like a Mack truck in first gear:

A series of "loans" of more than $400,000 made in 2004 to the owners of liberal talk-radio network Air America from a Bronx-based Boys & Girls Club.

The nugget of this story is just astonishing:

In early 2004, the directors of the nascent Air America network were scouring the nation for potential contributors to its start-up. One of the network's directors, Evan Montvel Cohen, appears to have partially solved the problem by arranging loans from the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club that eventually totaled at least $480,000, and possibly more.

According to reports, Cohen was in an advantageous position to secure the loans: In addition to directing Air America, Cohen also served as development director of the Gloria Wise club.

At the same time, it is worth noting, Cohen also secured loans to himself. All told, he borrowed more than $800,000, according to club officials.

In this case, "borrow" seems to be a loose term. The club's president says Cohen made at least one of the Air America loans - $213,000 - without her approval. Cohen no longer works for either the club or the network, and there is some indication that the current owner of Air America, Piquant LLC, may not have been aware of the loans at the time it purchased the network on May 24, 2004.

For the Boys & Girls Club, meanwhile, the results have been disastrous. The New York Department of Investigation announced in June that city grants and contracts to Gloria Wise - about $10 million worth - were to be suspended because its officials had approved "significant inappropriate transactions and falsified documents that were submitted to various city agencies."

You don't have to be a Columbia School of Journalism grad to sense that this developing story might have legs.

A private media start-up with huge political pretensions and meager financial underpinnings uses taxpayer dollars from a Boys & Girls Club to help pay the salaries of high-profile hosts like comedian Al Franken. As a result of these dubious loans and other self-dealing, the Gloria Wise club will be sending no more poor kids from the Bronx to summer camp. It will be providing a lot fewer services, if any, to the Alzheimer's patients it helped.

"I'm still rocking from the experience," said Anna Capell, 80, a member of the club's executive committee.

Wholly unrocked by the experience, however, is the Bronx-area paper of record, the New York Times, which, since the story began to seriously break on July 29, has published exactly nothing on the scandal.

The Times' lack of interest has become the scandal within the scandal. Bloggers, of course, are making hay over the Times' disinterest in a story that casts the formerly much-heralded Air America in a very bad light.

As well they should. News judgment is a subjective thing, certainly. But it is difficult to imagine a more politically explosive New York-centric subject than this one.

Air America Teaches Poor Kids Lessons in Wheeling and Dealing

Al Franken steals money from needy New York City kids. OK, that's not the story exactly, but hold off calling us a lying big, fat idiot liar, or whatever, because there are financial shenanigans afoot at Mr. Franken's employer, the Air America radio network.

When Air America was trolling for startup capital in 2004, they found an investor in the form of the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club, a Bronx-based nonprofit that aims to keep kids out of trouble. The club says it serves 15,000 kids every year and ran an Air America-branded summer camp in upstate New York that's since closed. What appears to have made the organization a likely investor was the fact that Air America's chairman, Evan Cohen, was also a development executive at Gloria Wise. The club loaned Air America a half-million dollars and loaned Mr. Cohen another $300,000. Problem is, the club's president claims not to have been fully informed about the transaction and the loans were never repaid.

Gloria Wise receives $10 million in grants from New York City. That's now in jeopardy as investigators try to unravel the mess. Air America's current owner, Piquant LLC, denies involvement and says it's upset because the loan wasn't on the books when they bought the network. They plan on repaying the loan. The company was formed by a core group of investors that did not include Mr. Cohen.

Next time Mr. Franken makes note of a Halliburton accounting irregularity, he might also consider the accounting irregularities behind his own paycheck and ask how many poor city kids might miss out on camp because of Air America's curious financial dealings. Quick, someone call Al Sharpton. He works nearby and knows how to handle companies that scam poor kids.

NYT At It Again
Not quite Utah
I’d say you’re at it again
So Doug MacEachern Arizona Republic columnist writes about this so called scandal.
As may other journalists who have a definite agenda
To even mention the NY Times in this context is partisan hogwash.
Having said that, carry on being you; I wouldn’t want you any other way

Of course, if this "loan" from the Boys & Girls Club was a Tom Delay operation, the NYT would have six reporters working n it 24/7, funneling their results to the House Ethics committee and the prosecutor in Texas who is gunning for Delay, and they would put themselves in for a Pulitzer for investigative reporting into the bargain. But since it's liberal graft and cronyism, why, it's all "boys will be boys" and a non-story.

How many childrens' charities do you know that would "invest" in a partisan political radio show that the kids couldn't even listen to because it's available only on subscriber systems. Do "tax-exempt" status mean anything to you? How about IRS violations? If this happens everyday, then maybe that's the story.

No, of course not. I'm merely pointing out the double standard of the NYT. They would be all over this story like white on rice if it involved a Republican. It don't, so it's not a story.

So Ralph, you correct me for ”mailman” but let me slide on “dog” when I should have said “canine”

Are you hallucinating?
Air America is a regular over the air broadcast network
It can be heard on 1190 AM in the NY Metro area.
The fact that it’s also available on XM means Diddley Squat
First it’s you “friend” at NASA with bogus information and now you yourself with equally bogus information---Please, do us all a favor and hire a fact checker

Damn right! It would have been "one small step for Enquiring Minds, one giant leap for The NYT." They have a very very long way to go to before they can be seen as presenting even-handed coverage.

Well, if you can't trust NASA, who can you trust? I felt no obligation to fact check his email. I should have run it by snopes, but since it wasn't the usual "fw" I didn't alert on it.

I admit I jumped to a conclusion about Air America because it is available on XM, and most stations on XM are not broadcast stations. So shoot me.
