Six remain in ‘Last Student’ contest

Published on 8/10/2005

WILTON -- The competition encouraging college students to outlast each other living on a bus in the Wilton Mall parking lot stretched into its seventh day on Tuesday, after two students left on Monday.

The student who can live on the bus the longest in the "Last Student Standing" contest sponsored by the Fly 92 radio station will be awarded a $10,000 scholarship. Of the 10 students who boarded the bus Aug. 3, six remain.

"Vibratin' Bryan" Comalli of Lee, Mass., left the bus at 10:45 a.m. Monday, followed by "Rockstar Russell" Gentner of Middleburg in the evening.

The students are given three meals a day, are only allowed to drink water, and can only leave the bus if they win "challenges," or brief competitions. Winners are given a brief recess.

According to Fly 92 on-air personality Candy, whose morning show Candy and Potter organized the competition, a "cafeteria food fight," was scheduled for Wednesday morning's challenge.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Undoubtedly it's unrestricted.

It's a scholarship to the Ralph Kramden Academy of Bus Drivers.

Unrestricted? In my day on campus that simply meant an extended experiment in the capacity for the young of the human species to imbibe heinous quantities of illegal substances in both individual and communal contexts.

Valuable work, to be sure, but I did my part unfunded.
