Mostly Mozart: An Excellent All-Beethoven Performance

Post by Ralph » Thu Aug 04, 2005 10:05 pm

Alice Tully Hall was packed tonight for the Mostly Mozart debuts of both the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and its conductor, Paavo Jarvi. Viktoria Mullova probably accounted for many of the tickets-she doesn't appear here often enough.

The Coriolan Overture launched the evening followed by Ms. Mullova in a very taut and exciting reading of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. After intermission, Maestro Jarvi jumped to the podium and gave the downbeat for the Eroica Symphony while the welcoming applause was still going strong. The third symphony isn't my favorite but tonight's performance was beautiful. Jarvi isn't going to end his career in Cincinnati!

I neglected to get tickets early and discovered on Sunday that this concert was sold-out, a message repeated by CenterCharge every time I called. But today I tried every half-hour and at 3PM, from the pool, I was told two tickets were returned. Arriving to pick them up I discovered they were 11th row center. :)

Alice Tully Hall is perfect for a chamber orchestra and I hope this Bremen outfit is re-engaged in the future. I'd like to see Jarvi conduct the Philharmonic.

I have tickets for three out of the next four days for Mostly Mozart so standby for more reports.

A taut and exciting review!
I agree with your assessment. Paavo will continue his career in Cincinnati.

A very old, close friend of mine lives in Cincinnati and attends all the Cincinnati S.O. concerts so I constantly needle him about being in a backwater.
