Karl Henning, you do us proud!
Is is possible for us to $BUY$ a CD featuring your compositions?
And do let us know how the Lenten Evening is received.

Congratulations, Karl! It looks like a most interesting program. Is Boston Symphony trombonist Doug Yeo participating by any chance?
If my daughter was still living in Boston, you can be sure I would be there!
Good luck with your concert ... any chance for a recording? I would love to hear some of this.

Splendid! Yes, open to the public; no admission charge as such, though there is a basket for voluntary donations. Be sure to say hi afterwards.Panzerfaust wrote:Congratulations!!!

It isn't quite 'featuring' . . . but the Santa Fe Women's Ensemble has a 25th-anniversary disc, which includes my modest Alleluia in D

I've been putting off responding to this one because Karl will need at least one extra bass and I hesitate to bill the church for my transatlantic round trip plus expenses.
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

A colleague in New York tells me that a message came from the Santa Fe Women's Ensemble administration, to say that the disc is now available.
I don't know, and that is good! I need to get to a place where performances and publication of my music is not always a direct result of my own efforts. :-)How did the Sante Fe Women's Ensemble find you?
Many thanks again, Huck!
. . . Also, the test-drive of the Nunc dimittis at Communion yesterday went very well!

That's 14:30 local time (we go to daylight saving a week earlier than you do). Does that station have a live feed?karlhenning wrote:The 12 March 'dress rehearsal' of the Nunc dimittis will be part of this Sunday's broadcast on Boston's WCRB (102.5 FM) at 7:30am.

The recording came out reasonably well for the Evensong, and in a week or so I will have it in send-out-able condition.

Karl,
I know this is off-topic, but I'm glad I didn't buy those tickets for the BSO concert this coming week (we had talked about it a while back). I understand Temirkanov has cancelled. I would have been pissed if I had spent the money and purchased an airline ticket to go up there and see him, only to have him not show.

Opera fans have to live with this phenomenon everytime they plan an opera vacation to hear a specific singer. My favorite mezzo, Brigitte Fassbaender, toward the end of her singing career (she began another career as intendant when she stopped singing) often disappointed fans who traveled especially to hear her. A colleague at IRS and his companion, who was the real opera nut in the family, had traveled on 3 separate occasions, to New York, London, and the west coast, to hear her sing and never did before she retired.Barry Z wrote:I understand Temirkanov has cancelled. It's not only operal fans. I scheduled my two trips to Amsterdam in 2000 and 2001 around Concertgebouw oncerts that interested me. The second one was Bruckner's 5th under Thielemann. He cancelled and was replaced by Inbal. The Orchestra sounded glorious playing Bruckner in that hall, but it was a strange performance interpretively.
And now Sawallisch has cancelled for the set of concerts he was supposed to conduct here with the Philadelphia Orchestra beginning this week due to health reasons. At one point, I thought the next week and a half might wind up being a personal Brahms festival with the potential for spectacular performances of Brahms D-Minor concerto and first symphony under Sawallisch (and Buchbinder in the concerto) and the fourth symphony under Temirkanov). I'll still go to the concerto performance. Hans Graff is subbing for Sawallisch. This is probably my single favorite concerto and I practically salivate when I think about hearing the Philadelphia Orchestra with the sound they put out while Sawallisch is on the podium playing those big orchestral salvos in the first movement. He also cancelled the only other time he was supposed to conduct it here, in the late 90s. Pollini was the soloist that time. I guess it's just not meant to be.

Extraordinary, Karl. Deeply moving. I am quite in tears. How you caputured in your trombone duet the winsomeness of a man who is ready to die because he has literally seen everything, the ambivalence of a devout man about to go to sleep knowing that the end of every day is much like the end of life.
The following is excerpted and slightly rearranged from the Wikipedia for our posters who do not know the details:
"Nunc dimittis" is the Latin name of the passage in the second chapter of Luke (Luke 2:29–32) that is also commonly called the Canticle of Simeon. Simeon was a devout Jew who had been promised by the Holy Ghost that he would not die until he had seen the Saviour. When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for his circumcision, Simeon was there, and he took Jesus into his arms and uttered words rendered variously as follows:
Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum:
Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel.
According to the Douay-Rheims Translation
(A literal translation of the Vulgate made in the 17th century):
Now Thou dost dismiss Thy servant, O Lord, according to Thy word in peace.
Because mine eyes have seen Thy salvation
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
A light to the revelation of the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel.
Many composers have set the text to music, usually coupled with the Magnificat, as both the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis are sung during the Anglican/Episcopal Evensong service (see: Book of Common Prayer). The Nunc Dimittis is sung or said during the Roman Catholic Compline service as well.
