Leonel Power

Post by lmpower » Thu May 04, 2006 4:54 pm

I have just discovered the existence of Leonel Power. He was an English composer who lived from 1370 to 1445. He is considered to be second only to John Dunstable at that time. I have been familiar with Dunstable's music for many years but somehow missed Leonel Power. This is especially strange since we share the same surname. I have been listening to some clips of Power's music on the internet and find it comparable in beauty to Dunstable. The harmonies of that period were quite interesting and sound different from later masters like Palestrina. I believe they used a device called hoccet. I would appreciate the insights of some of you old music experts.

Not familiar with his music, but my understanding is that he developed many of the techniques that comprised the constance anglais popularized by Dunstable.

 I only vaguely remember an Argo album of his music in the late 60s or early 70s. As the Contessa d'EM I'm completely embarrassed.
