"clinician"; "Honors Choir" - the meanin

Post by Yuta » Tue May 09, 2006 1:45 am

I'm translating music educators bios from English into Russian and, not a music expert, I need an explanation of some terms.
"clinician" (in "a clinician and guest conductor") -- what does "clinician" mean?

"High School Honors Choir" -- I know the phrase "honors student," but what does "honors choir" mean? Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the board.

A clinician in this context is an expert who is invited to direct all or part of a training workshop or conference. For instance, when I was a church musician we would have regional meetings a couple of times a year and would usually invite a nationally known figure (choir director, composer, whatever) to lead key sessions.

An honors choir is simply an advanced choir for better singers among the students. It is usually a feature only of certain high school programs and usually refers to an interscholastic group to which a variety of schools in an area send several students each for a choral festival. If an individual school has a large enough choral program to have more than one chorus, the best group is usually called the "chamber chorus" or "chamber choir."

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

the clinician is the guest conductor, hired to work some intensive rehearsals with the honors choir (or band), who probably auditioned in competition with others of their age group, for a spot in the ensemble.
quite often the clinic culminates in a concert/recording.

you're strelka, aren't you?

Wasn't going to go there myself. Too weird.
