East 41 Street facing the New York Public Library is called "Library Row" with bronze plaques offering quotes from famous authors on both sides of the street.
Barely in from Fifth Avenue is Book-Off, a Japanese establishment. In the large store are very many items of interest to Japanese browsers. They also sell many thousands of English books for either half-price or less or $1.
Book-Off has a huge selection of Japanese DVDs and CDs, most of the latter being of interest only to those from that country. But there is a small classical section with many CDs on Western labels which have not been released here or if they were, the cost at Book-Off is much less. I bought a half-dozen including the Saito Kinen Orchestra under Ozawa performing Mahler's Ninth Symphony for $10. All the discs were new and sealed.

Re: Japanese Classical CDs for 1/2 or More Off in NYC
The Japanese discs are the most expensive I've seen. It is difficult to get deals on them, but they are meticulous in dealing with their customers and get merchandise out quickly, well wrapped. There are many I have missed over the years, but I'm still alive, nonetheless! Do you know if this Book-Off place has a web site, Ralph? Thanks for providing this good information.Ralph wrote:East 41 Street facing the New York Public Library is called "Library Row" with bronze plaques offering quotes from famous authors on both sides of the street.
