in 1892, Leoncavallo's opera I Pagliacci took place in Milano, Italy with Arturo Toscanini conducting. The first cast included Victor Maurel and Mario Ancona.

It's a pity that Toscanini never recorded it.

Indeed it is ... I don't believe there was even a pirate recording with Toscanini.
