A Myth Perpetuated by RL Stevenson?

Post by dulcinea » Fri May 12, 2006 11:07 pm

As I watch TREASURE PLANET on the Disney Channel, I have suddenly realized that I have never heard of pirate treasures in reality. Have there ever been pirate treasures, or are we talking about what today we would call an urban myth?

Pirate treasures have been recovered but almost exclusively (and rarely) from sunken ships. Gold and other valuables are still seriously searched for at various points especially from Spanish treasure ships. It's a form of venture capitalism.

Advances in technology have made such expeditions flourish and a few have succeeded.

I don't know of any treasure uncovered on a deserted beach by kids with shovels and pails. :)

On the other hand, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is based on a true story.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
