Of course you're the judge of how PMs from other to other should be worded.

I had accidentally edited out the word "friendly": my comment to Daniel featured the word friendly, and I had had a PM exchange with him before, of a friendly nature.

The point is not if my comments towards Daniel upset you - there is very little that does not upset you on most days. The point is if it upsets him. And there is no sign of that. Maybe Daniel doesn't feel this need to be babied by you - ever thought about that? Or in his own words:
