Too easy...Dittersdorf.

He looks like Louis the 16th just before beheading.

Well no, but someone's got to get him out of the way. :)

Jean-Baptiste Lully...just after he stabbed himself in the foot with his conducting baton. Got infected, gangrenous and it eventually killed him.

Hmm...I've seen that portrait somewhere. Maybe in a chess-book. Is it André Danican Philidor...?! He really looks French!

Cannabich? Was his mother an ill-tempered marijuana fiend?

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

NAXOS has released several discs of his music. The works are excellent, very satisfying.

I couldn't resist. Unfortunately as you know I all too often can't resist, but how else will I get to my 5000th post?

BTW welcome to your new status as resident composer. Based on what I've heard, it is richly deserved. I really have to visit my friend and former mentor the rector at St. John's in Hingham this summer (as you know, Boston is only an overnight trip). I'll give you a call, and if it's possible it would be nice to do more than shake hands over the counter at the museum store of the MFA.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Oh, Corlyss---Cannabich was one of the most important and influencial of the composers of the "Mannheimer Schule"......if you lived here you'd know him.....
