ArkivMusic is expanding its market

Up to October, 2006, www.ArkivMusic.com shipped only to addresses in the US and Canada. That has changed. I found this on the site today in the FAQ section:

6. Does ArkivMusic ship outside of the U.S. and Canada?

As of October 2006, we've added the ability to ship orders to Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. We hope that we will be increasing this list to include even more countries in 2007.

I have done some business with Archiv and find them to have an excellent site. In view of Tower's rapid departure, places such as Archiv and H&B, in the USA, will no doubt become the leaders of online classical music CD buying. H&B takes longer to get things. Archiv seems to have an arrangement for CD distributors to ship directly to Archiv's customers. You may get a whole bunch of small packages when you order, but the service is fast. They also have access to many discs unavailable elsewhere in America.

They are also now producing licensed re-issues of OP recordings from Universal and Ondine. THese reproduce the cover art and tray card but not the notes and are advertised to sound as good as the original CD.

I'm looking at a couple of recordings by Raimo Sirkia, a wonderful tenor. I heard him on a Met broadcast and the Segerstam recording of Mahler's Eighth.

Arkiv is a fine site -

But CD Universe has much lower prices.

And very good service, too.

Never multiple packages, a la Arkiv.

I would recommend trying
cduniverse.com before ordering from
Arkiv. You will save some bucks.

Arkiv is an excellent source - good selection, great search engine for browsing, really superior, at least IMO.
and - they are very quick on delivery, sometimes less than a week for parts of orders...

I have one of their special releases - Mozart Serenades by the NY WW Soloists - very fine disc....

I will check out CDUniverse, tho - it sounds interesting....

Still, I get very frustrated by lame, clunky site search engines, it is really annoying, and unnecessary...Arkiv's is quite superior...

Having shopped all over the 'net, I can only agree with Heck: Arkiv has the best website, bar none. When I am looking for a particular work, that's where I go first. I may not always buy from them, but I get informed from them anyway. As for their service, it is tops in my book. I only stick over prices. When there is a genuine disparity, I go with cduniverse, or even more often, with cdconnection. Search engines are marginal, prices and service are super.

I certainly agree with all the above comments.

Arkiv's search abilities are excellent, and I, too,
use that site for research - but seem to wind up buying from
CD Universe.

CDU's search function is OK. I usually use the
"advanced search" and 99% of the time come
up with what I am looking for. And, anyway, the
$$ savings are, to me, worth a few extra seconds of
cyber-hunting.

I've never been disappointed with CDU's service - they
immediately inform me if the disc is not available and so I
have a choice of buying it elsewhere or waiting. And their "fill"
percentage is very good.

Many of the new cpo discs, for instance, are under $12.
