I saw David Poleri twice with the New York City Opera, as Don Jose and Cavaradossi. He is also well known for a film version of Tosca with Leontyne Price. Today he would be regarded as one of the world's best tenors. In his day the competition was Corelli, Del Monaco, Bjoerling, and Tucker.

Yes, and he did some splendid work—quite a lot, in fact—with among my favourite conductors: Dimitri Mitropoulos. What a shame to end a career in the manner that it occurred.
