woot.com

Post by Ralph » Sat Sep 02, 2006 12:26 pm

My son got me into this one. Woot is an online merchant offering just one product in any 24 hour period, often with limited quantities. The goods range from computer stuff to electronics to household items to sports stuff. Prices are way below retail. I bought a set of good computer speakers with a subwoofer for just $25 ($5 flat shipping on all orders) and they're better than the ones that came with my new office Dell laptop.

The commentary for each product is crisp and often funny. Wooters' comments are provided and even scathing reviews are given uneditied.

Checking woot.com each day is fun. I probably will buy more but who knows what and when.

I just discovered that my computer usage at work (remember, I'm a federal emplyee) is being monitored a la Big Brother big time, so I would have to wait until I get home to go to this marvelous site, and what fun is that?

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

I don't know if they do.

I should have mentioned thaty each item is available until sold out OR 24 hours, whichever comes first.

Yes, but trust me, they don't care about anything except porn sites. The rest is a matter of your use of your work time, which is up to your boss to deal with. That is, if you are spending 60% of your time on the internet, instead of teaching your students, your boss and your students would probably notice. But if you are between classes or on break, they ain't comin' after you unless you are on porn sites.

Fortunately, porn sites are filtered. Where's the emoticon for "whew"?

How effective is the filter, John? What if you google "John Cage" or "Milton Babbitt?"

It is so effective that it interprets Debussy as WC.

You type in "octokitty" instead.
