Well, the Empire State Building should be on that list. It was and remains a potent symbol of evolving 20th Century urbanism.
And how about the Grand Coulee Dam? And the Golden Gate Bridge.

Gee, Steve...most of those "new" wonders are a thousand years old or more. I like the idea of the Eiffel Tower. Maybe Legoland should be a candidate alongside this giant erector set construction. I like Neuschwanstein, too, and think a classic skyscraper makes a lot of sense--but I'd pick the Chrysler building over the Empire State any day. I agree with the Golden Gate Bridge, but would suggest Hoover Dam. What about the Panama Canal? The Chunnel?
But to my mind the greatest wonder of the modern world is the popularity of Jim Carrey.

I like the Chunnel idea. I am not so sure any US buildings qualify, but the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, designed in toto by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is a truly great work of art. Also, that art museum in Bilbao, Spain that was designed by Frank Gehry. Oh, probably the Leaning Tower of Pisa should be on the list, too. And also, the whole body of work of the modern founder of the art of landscape architecture (I put the "modern" qualifier in there because no one, to the best of my knowledge, knows who designed the Hanging Gardens of Babylon), Frederick Law Olmstead, deserves recognition, whether it is for Central Park in NYC, or the Chicago or Buffalo park systems.DavidRoss wrote:Gee, Steve...most of those "new" wonders are a thousand years old or more. As others have implied, I thnk the list needed some narrowing criteria. There have been a lot of lists like this, and often those who compile them (usually with input from others) violate their own criteria. I had fun with my students several years ago going over a list of architectural wonders which included among other things the Panama Canal, a wonder for sure, a work of architecture not.
There is one on the proposed list that I think should not be there, and that's Neuschwanstein Castle, which is an interesting curiosity and tourist site but hardly a wonder of the world in any sense.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
