Happy Australia Day!

Post by Ralph » Fri Jan 26, 2007 8:10 am

On this date, Jan. 26, 1788, the first European settlers, led by the indomitable Capt. Arthur Phillip, landed in present-day Sydney within blocks of Agnes Selby's home (so I'm told).

I have a lovely Australian lass from Adelaide doing her last semester of law school with us in one of my seminars. She and a Canadian student are celebrating Australia Day in Manhattan at what they assure me will be a fairly exuberant gin mill.

Happy Australia Day to our CMGers from Down Under whose words and wisdom enliven and inform.

Here is a tribute to that island country (a US take on an Aussie classic tune):

It's also the date of death of two great pianists associated with Australia, Bruce Hungerford (1977), who was born and grew up there, and his teacher, Ignaz Friedmann (1948), who died there.

To join our Aussie friends on this auspicious day, check out the Royal Australian Navy Band on the URL below. Some nice selections, well performed. Incidentally, a recent article in an Australian musicology journal reports that the wonderful, sprightly tune, "Waltzing Matilda," is actually derived from a Dittersdorf piece.

Is there anything distinctively Aussie about the video game?

Australia Day

Post by Agnes Selby » Fri Jan 26, 2007 3:43 pm

Thank you all on behalf of my fellow Sydney-siders.

It was a lovely day and while many official celebrations were taking place
and gongs were distributed by the PM, the Australian Open continued
in Melbourne, Australia defeated England in cricket and most people took to our wonderful beaches.

Captain Cook stumpled on a great continent :D

Regards,
Agnes.

I celebrated Australia Day in typical Aussie fashion.

I got up late

I went to the pub

I watched us smash the Poms - AGAIN - at cricket.

I had a meat pie

All in all a great day.

Holden Fourth you will appreciate this.

While living in New York our son, Michael was often looked after
by our Aussie friend Jean who makes the best meat pies and lamingtons.
Mike was often the recepient of her excellent meat pies - but he did not like them. They contained MEAT. He preferred the pies he used to buy in his Sydney shool's tuck shop which contained NO MEAT.
Was it, perhaps, a sign of homesickness?

Regards,
Agnes.

Ditto, but please, Gary, "Australiensis" (it's a long story). :)

Cheers,

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

Dear Joannes Neo-Eboracensis,

 What kind of species are you referring to exactly?
The Australopithcines have died out a long time ago. However, Australiensis sounds pretty good - is it a new species?

Kind regards,
Agnes.
