I think it's always nationalistic, but not always political. Although I do realize many people use the term 'political' anymore to mean nationalistic.burnitdown wrote:"Patriotic music" is political...
If so, then the United States has a lot to be political about.burnitdown wrote:"Patriotic music" is political...

Do you mean patriotic instead of nationalistic?anasazi wrote:I think it's always nationalistic, but not always political. Although I do realize many people use the term 'political' anymore to mean nationalistic.burnitdown wrote:"Patriotic music" is political...
It cannot be repeated often enough. I'm not one of those wanting to toss the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem, but if I did, it would be for this one. The line 'thy liberty in law', that is pretty fine I think. I can recommend a good recording. The Boston Pops, conducted by Williams.jbuck919 wrote:If so, then the United States has a lot to be political about.burnitdown wrote:"Patriotic music" is political...
I notice that there is no rendition of one of my favorites, "America the Beautiful." (Maybe just as well since I don't care much for pop versions of these things, and yes, I did notice the exceptions.) This beatiful anthem is almost entirely in the subjunctive, having the ring of "may it be so."
America the Beautiful (abridged)
Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
