Really Big Day
Really Big Day
A new Jewish deli has finally opened in Philly's famed Reading Terminal Market just a couple blocks from where I live. Watching the guy behind the counter hand-carve the wonderful pastrami was as close as I may ever come to having a religious experience.
On the down side, I'm going to be tempted to go there way more often than any person who cares even remotely about his weight should.

I gather, Barry, that you do not have a high opinion about the new hot pastrami sub at Subway (I found it adequate, and yes I did have it with mustard).
There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
-- Johann Sebastian Bach
You're almost certainly right, John. But I'll never know for sure since you couldn't pay me to eat at a Subway or Quiznos in the city of the cheesesteak and hoagie (and now good Jewish deli). Quiznos makes a brisket sandwich that I'll also never be trying.jbuck919 wrote:I gather, Barry, that you do not have a high opinion about the new hot pastrami sub at Subway (I found it adequate, and yes I did have it with mustard).

And I'll wager that Ted and I are of one mind, on this issue at least .Ted wrote:John Wrote:I can speak for Barry on this....No, John he does not have a high opinion of the pastrami at SubwayI gather, Barry, that you do not have a high opinion about the new hot pastrami sub at Subway

Yeah. I'm not sure I can ever recall having a shake with a pastrami or corned beef sandwich. I think the place serves egg creams, but no shakes.Ted wrote:Ralph Writes:Why would you want a milkshake with Pastrami? Is the place kosher or can you get a milkshake to go with the pastrami?
However, it's part of the Reading Terminal, an indoor combination farmer's market and foodcourt that is justly famous. And within the Terminal there are a couple ice cream stands. So it's just a matter of walking over an aisle or two if you want a shake with your sandwich.

Does it make any difference when you can have a Diet Coke?Ralph wrote:Barry,

I went with a diet Dr. Brown's Black Cherry. It accompanied the pastrami perfectly.

Any place that has diet soda other than cola is my kind of place.Barry Z wrote:I went with a diet Dr. Brown's Black Cherry. It accompanied the pastrami perfectly.

Ain't that the truth! I'm always excited when I can find a good caffine-free diet soda while dining out (root beer, ginger ale, fresca, black cherry.......all good options).jbuck919 wrote:Any place that has diet soda other than cola is my kind of place.Barry Z wrote:I went with a diet Dr. Brown's Black Cherry. I'm not sure. It seems to be the soda of Jewish delis, at least on the east coast. Most of them carry it.Gary wrote:Is that a regional drink?Barry Z wrote:Dr. Brown

Dr. Brown's soda is distributed in major cities but it started in New York and the biggest sales are here. Their most famous flavor is creme soda, available in regular and diet. They also offer regular and diet black cherry soda, a great drink.
Their weirdest flavor, which I doubt is sold outside Jewish delis and kosher restaurants, is Cel-Ray, a soda made with...yep, celery. My son really likes it.

For the record, hoagies, or sandwiches of any sort, from philadelphia are generally terrible. Just like the people who inhabit the city of Philadelphia. What a bunch of terrible sports fans and human beings they all are. Obviously, i don't mean 100% of people from philadelphia are trash; the actual percentage is probably closer to 96-98%
Pair Cel-Ray with a hoagie from philly, and you've got the worst meal imaginable.
If my memory serves me, the flavoring is not actually celery.Ralph wrote: Their weirdest flavor, which I doubt is sold outside Jewish delis and kosher restaurants, is Cel-Ray, a soda made with...yep, celery. My son really likes it.

And I suppose you're from an area with superior food and superior people??? Where would that be?Stonebraker wrote:For the record, hoagies, or sandwiches of any sort, from philadelphia are generally terrible. Just like the people who inhabit the city of Philadelphia.
