Inqlings | Kimmel's pay to play is tuneful fun

By Michael Klein
Inquirer Columnist

As you might expect - this being Philly and all - pay to play was a big hit on Saturday.

That is, the Kimmel Center's idea of allowing the public to buy playing time on its new Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ. (Gotta pay the electric bill.)

Fifty-four people put down $25 a minute or $75 for a five-minute block for the afternoon event.

A student from New England Conservatory's Preparatory School in Boston drove six hours for a minute.

An organist from New York City bought 10 minutes.

Perhaps the most touching moment was a man who stepped up and announced that in honor of his 77th birthday, he would play "Johnny One-Note" because friends had chipped in to buy him time. And he played exactly one note for about five seconds before he shyly stepped away. Just then, H.L. Smith, a Temple University faculty member who was assisting the organists, sat down and serenaded the man with "Happy Birthday" as the crowd sang along.

Kimmel spokesman Paul Marotta said the program likely would be repeated.

They'll waive the fee when the Great Brossoni steps into the hall.

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.

This sounds like the reverse of a download. Pay to upload.

I'd buy a few minutes.
