I've never been to the festival but I hope to go some day as we visit the beautiful state of Oregon from time to time. Several recordings led by Helmut Rilling for the Hänssler label have come from the festival including Messiah, Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and Orchestral Suites and Schubert's Mass in A-Flat Major.

Unfortunately I can barely bring myself to get from Europe to the East Coast. Maybe after I retire I'll be able to to endure the less strenuous trip across a continent. I'll have to settle for the Organ Historical Society Convention, which this year by pure happenstance is in Saratoga. With luck I'll catch a Mostly Mozart in New York with Ralph.

I moved to Eugene from D.C. just before he performed St. Matthew's Passion at Kennedy Center.

DC?! You too? That makes about a half a dozen or so of us here that live or lived in the DC area.

Cleveland Park! Wow yourself. What a lovely little village inside DC!

I lived in Arlington, just northeast of the intersection of Lee Hwy and Glebe Road, a scant 4 mi from the DC line, for 48 years. My dad's last duty station was the Pentagon. Inertia and government service kept us there but I couldn't imagine wanting to live anywhere else until one day in 1981 I just didn't want to be there any more.

You know, the political capital of an incomparably great nation is not supposed to be without a certain charm, although according to all historical testimony it took them long enough to get there. (Charles Dickens said something like "there are great gateways to magnificent vistas wanting only the vistas to be gateways to"). I will never go back there to live, but I shall always miss it. We're talking about half my life.

I can imagine what it looked like in the mid-19th century. I'm back in the middle of Lincoln's assassination (American Brutus), and when they talk about the vast forested empty lands between Federal City (the location of federal offices and the homes of their civil servants) and the state lines, one has to remove stuff to picture it.

I will never go back there to live, but I shall always miss it. We're talking about half my life.

I've been a little homesick for it the last 6 months. Can't think why, except it was home for so long.
