I didn't know about Heck, and it is inexcusable that Mark slipped my mind. That rather makes it interesting in the other direction, doesn't it? Now we don't have that many posters who play anything else, except piano.

P.S. In case some of you misunderstand, it's sometimes considered bad luck to say "bonne chance" for formal artistic performances. I don't know how it originated, but "je te dis merde" is considered good luck!

The same is true among theater folk— that's why we say "break a leg" instead of "have a good show." You really don't think we wish broken legs on anyone, do you?

FWIW, I've talked to the Dean several times about an item in the annual Cathedral budget, Travel Expenses to Bring People in to Karl's Musical Events.

He must be waiting on word from the Bishop, Joe; that's the only snag I can think of :-)

Recital went very well; and considering both what a bitter cold day it was in Boston yesterday, and that the Wednesday recital series is only now being revived after dropping off the Boston calendar last year during the search for a new music director at St Paul's, I enjoyed an unusually large audience of 17. They received my performance (and compositions) with grace and warm applause. I had found it a pleasure to play the program in any event, but for such a musically simpatico listenership, my pleasure was much compounded.

Timing (as much a matter of rehearsal with Pete as of composition) suggested holding off on The Mousetrap until the autumn. I quickly decided on these early piano pieces as a substitution, and decided to postpone Blue Shamrock as well, lest my plate overflow.

At eleven this morning, the three of us sat down to read through Mirage, just to hear how it sounds in the space, and to spot-rehearse. Before we started, though, Ed (who generally plays jazz evenings) goes, "I don't remember the last time I played chamber music without drums." So I said, I could write in a vibraslap part.

The recital went reasonably well. It started pouring just before the recital began, though, so turnout was light, but appreciative.

There is now a chance for even those beyond the Boston pale to listen to some Henningmusick.

The 9 September performance at St Paul's of my Alleluia in D for mixed choir unaccompanied will be part of this week's radio broadcast. Granted, it is but a four-minute piece and I don't know just where in the half-hour program it will be fitted, but such details as I can furnish, do here follow:

This weekend past, I've finished overall composition of the new clarinet and viola duet, The Mousetrap, which Peter Cama-Lekx and I will play in a December recital.

When I started drawing this new piece up in June, I was thinking a 14-minute piece (but I was also thinking comparatively 'compact', because at first I had the wild idea of getting it ready for an imminent recital). I took work on the piece back up a month or so ago, and when it reached the 14-minute mark, my general sketch for the rest of the piece seemed to imply a 17-minute duration; but I wasn't kidding myself, I knew all along that the finished Mousetrap would run 20 minutes.

One thing which the piece is about compositionally, is the organic incorporation of musical references ranging from Bach to Shostakovich. All the 'found objects' relate to the pitch-world of my piece, so actually in addition to the 'flat-out quotations', there are small bits in the 'purely original' passages which resonate with the pure Bach, Shostakovich, & al.

Well, I think the best chance for those of us beyond the Boston pale would not be to get a grant to ship us all out to Boston, but to ship Karl out to all of us.

That is, if Karl likes travelling. Think of it, Karl--Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix.... You could spiral through the whole continent, ending up in triumph somewhere around Kansas City, and we could all just sit at home and wait for you to show up!

Anyway, keep those clips coming. Your musick is very nice indeed.

Well, I've heard several Henning pieces, including these last five, and I've yet to hear one without any melody. Indeed, the percussion piece is essentially two melodies superimposed, one on wood blocks and one on one of those pitched instruments you play with mallets, marimba possibly. (Vibraphones and xylophones are also nice, yes.)

Anyway, if you need melody, Murmur of Many Waters gives you plenty!

Not that anyone cares, including me, but I liked Murmur and Irreplaceable Doodles the best. Not to say that I didn't like the other three, because I did.

Thanks for these, Karl. As for the rest of you, better pick these up while you can. You won't always be able to get Henning's music for free, or so I'm guessing!

Fixing to before this year is done, Gary. At the start of the year, I had (apart from the 'unfinished business' of White Nights) two pieces I was commissioned to write, and scheduled for performance; so my musical New Year's resolution was, to compose nothing else until the completion of:

1. The Passion According to St John (which we sang on Good Friday); unaccompanied choir; 40 minutes.

2. Music for a 5 July wedding in Wisconsin; organ, clarinet, string quartet, brass quintet; ca. 35 minutes when finished.

And then 3. The 20 minutes or so of music yet to compose so that White Nights is at long last complete.
