well, I liked the Schubert 10th more than the 7th. The 10th is reminiscent of the 9th in many ways, particularly the increased focus on counterpoint in the outer movements. Overall, I thought there were some moments that sounded legitimately Schubert-ian, and others which did not; which I suppose is what I expected. IMO Newbold's completion is a bit...timid. I realize he was using piano sketches, but oftentimes he makes minimal effort to make any changes at all to the original sketches, and I think it hurts the music at times. The 3rd movement scherzo was quite interesting, and I agree that it sounds like it could have been intended as both a scherzo and a finale. The other interesting performance in this set which I'll need to listen to is the "Finished" 8th, which includes the entr'acte music from Rosamunde as the scherzo and finale. That approach intrigues me even more than the completions of the 7th and 10th, as in that case, Schubert actually wrote all of the music...

The Tchaikovsky 7th is interesting. It was primarily completed by Taneyev and Bogatryev based on sketches and parts of the 3rd piano concerto. It certainly sounds very Tchaikovsky-esque, with the exception of the out of place snare drum in the finale.

Overall, both works are interesting but problematic, which shouldn't surprise me based on their respective origins.

good stuff...the first is firmly in the neo-classical mold with lots of Brahmsian overtones and a wealth of contrapuntal writing. The second is a little more adventurous and leans towards Schoenberg territory.

I have really enjoyed the music of these two living French composers. Completely different in style but both produce powerfully engaging music.

JQP - Draga - Concert Overture #2 (Rau/Olympia)

What is his music like?

That may be the only work by this composer ever recorded. When I looked him up - always curious about a composer I have never heard of - I found that he died in 2008 and had published 15 symphonies, and a lot more music. He also seems to have held important jobs in the field of Romanian music. In hopes of listening to some of his music I looked through my three anthologies of Romanian music - that is 18 cds total - and there is not one piece of his on any of them.

I find it amazing that in this day and age someone with his position and output can go through life almost unrecorded and unknown outside his country.

I am listening to Octavian Nemescu - Quatre Dimmensions en Temps IV 'Illuminations'

Hey UB, I saw your Dillon piano recommendation. Thanks.

The Draga Overture is a dreary piece. Single minded (in other words a 10 minute piece of almost no contrast) slow music with material that does not grab one's attention. The recorded performance has less than good intonation so it makes listening to it even more intollerable.

Today's listening:

Riisager - Concert Overture: Erasmus Montanus (Rozhdestvensky/Chandos)
Vasks - String Symphony - Voices (Aleksa/Conifer)
Englund - Piano Concerto #1 (Sivelov/Naxos)

Have been directed in my listening this afternoon by some recent posts on the board:-

Mendelssohn - Symphony No.3 'Scottish' (Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Warner)

Mozart - 'Vesperae solennes de confessore' (Kiri Te Kanawa/Elizabeth Bainbridge/Ryland Davies/Gwenny Howell/Colin Davis, London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Philips)

Schumann - Violin Concerto (Thomas Zehetmair/Christoph Eschenbach, Philharmonia Orchestra, Teldec)

What do you think of Riisager? I have heard very little of his music.

Lucian Metianu - Simfonia I - lots of layers in this music. It brings to my mind Birtwistle.
