Wanted: A Few Good Villains
Wanted: A Few Good Villains
On 31 Jan I tried to watch EDGE OF DARKNESS, but quit when I realised that the villain was--for the 1.000.000th time--one of those industrial entities that take a malicious pleasure in lightheartedly contaminating the environment. Really, the thriller genre is in a desperate need for fresh villains--villains that are not cliches stolen from a hundred V--as in vinegar--movies! Right now it seems that hardly anyone is widely acceptable as a villain except for the ludicrous Fu Manchu-type megalomaniacs bent on world domination who are the most worn-out cliches of the 007 universe, and the white supremacists and similar racists who appeared so often in WALKER, TEXAS RANGER that Chuck Norris himself joked that that show gave the impression that half of the population of TX was made up of members of the Aryan Brotherhood.

The slimiest, most despicable villains ever:
Richard Widmark as Tommy Udo in Kiss of Death
Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth (along with Dean Stockwell) in Blue Velvet
John Glover as Alan Raimy (along with Clarence Williams III) in 52 Pick-Up
If you haven't seen 'em, they're new to you.

Yes, great film. The scene where Udo sends the old lady in the wheelchair crashing down the stairs is truly terrifying.moldyoldie wrote:Well, anyone catch it on TCM last night?moldyoldie wrote:Richard Widmark as Tommy Udo in Kiss of Death

Among my favorite movie villains is the dentist played by Larry Olivier in Marathon Man. Also, the Glenn Close & John Malkovich characters in Dangerous Liasons. And Alan Rickman's over-the-top bad guys in Robin Hood and Quigley Down Under. Ian McKellan's Richard III.
But the greatest of all, the villain we really come to root for because he's so deviously clever and manipulative, and has so much fun plotting his petty vengeance, is Francis Urquhart from the BBC's House of Cards trilogy, played deliciously by Ian Richardson.

"Most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives." ~Leo Tolstoy
"It is the highest form of self-respect to admit our errors and mistakes and make amends for them. To make a mistake is only an error in judgment, but to adhere to it when it is discovered shows infirmity of character." ~Dale Turner
"Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted in large ones either." ~Albert Einstein
"Truth is incontrovertible; malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it; but, in the end, there it is." ~Winston Churchill

Gene Tierney in "Leave Her to Heaven" -- there are villainesses who made my blood run cold.
