Well, and I feel great about having re-aired the Brahms. I probably feel better than I strictly have any right to . . . .

Re: Henningmusick
Bulletins arrived in yesterday's mail attesting to the use of my Three Short Pieces for organ at a parish in Newton, Mass on Saturday the 15th.
And I shall have lunch today with the conductor who created the première of Out in the Sun.

Re: Henningmusick
Nice e-mail message just in from a friend here in Boston, who is an assistant director at a Unitarian parish (chap named Dan). I sent him the setting which I had written for Paul and the FCB choir (and who have performed the motet very nicely) of a classic Unitarian text ("Love is the spirit of this church . . .") Dan is sure they will make use of it (far better than the dippy setting that we currently have, he writes).
As always, my music has legs in a small, obscure way.

Re: Henningmusick
Is this of your own composition, Karl? If so, one can only be impressed by your creative versatility. To be creative in a many century-old traditional idiom is a remarkable achievement, IMHO.
In the eyes of those lovers of perfection, a work is never finished—a word that for them has no sense—but abandoned....(Paul Valéry)

Re: Henningmusick
Many thanks, Jacques! Yes, that's a piece I wrote some ten years ago. I managed somehow to imbue it with a kind of 'folkloric' quality which many fellow musicians over the years have commented on.
Delighted that you enjoy it, mon cher!

At this point I do not expect that Eric Mazonson will wish me to make the Brahms Sonatas available publicly. So rather than create an event at Instant Encore just for the encore we played that Sunday (the Tropes on Parasha's Aria from White Nights), I have added that mp3 to my ReverbNation profile.

Re: Henningmusick
A virtual acquaintance who is finishing a degree in viola performance at the Eastman School remembered with generous kindness a sketch I was working on a couple of years ago for viola and piano. He's asked me to finish it for a viola sonata, with an eye to including it on his September recital.
So . . . I've been working at it.,

I love the sound of the viola and I hope that your muse is kind to you.
Would you take a different approach when writing for strings as opposed to wind instruments?

Re: Henningmusick
I've actually written quite a little chamber music including violin or viola (and even cello). Not much of it has been performed recently . . . although we did two of my cl/vn/pf trios in June, and hopefully we'll have audio of that soon.Fergus wrote:A slightly unusual one for you Karl?

My musical language won't change, but certainly the writing for the viola must be idiomatic. Piece is cooking nicely.

Re: Henningmusick
Almost finished with Suspension Bridge, the second movement of the Viola Sonata. I meet with the violist on Friday, so it will be nice to have this ready (as it looks like I shall) to show him and discuss . . . mostly, make sure I haven't demanded the impossible. He responded very nicely to the first movement, Fair Warning . . . and I was relieved to find that all that movement is manageable, even when quite tricky.
Then, of course, I need to wrap up the final movement, Tango in Boston . . . which I had begun some four years ago, and for whose completion this request for a full-blown sonata has been the happy occasion.
The whole piece will run some 25 minutes.
Cheers,
~Karl

(in a heavy metal voice) Woah! Dude, yer into Van Halen??? Right on, man!
"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and
combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and
especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage
over the other media through which a person can represent
the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme
capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the
assistance of reason...Music presents at once the intensity
and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and
intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended
by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like
a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul."

Hard to believe, really. Music which I only started plotting in July, and quite challenging technically, Dana is going to play to an audience tonight.
On a less sublime note: hard to believe that I'm flying to Newark. (I'm not really, only flying through.)
At the airport, just waiting to board.

I'm happy to hear it went well, Karl. I'm anxious to hear the piece properly (the midi version provided a good taste but a rather distorted taste, if you know what I mean). Was the performance recorded?karlhenning wrote:The Viola Sonata was a smashing musical success.

Oh, full agreement on the limitations of the MIDI, Sarge!Sergeant Rock wrote:I'm happy to hear it went well, Karl. The concert was recorded, but I have been cautioned that Eastman is in no institutional hurry to furnish it. Our wait may be measured in months rather than weeks.
But when we do get it, it will be excellent.

Re: Henningmusick
Clarinet and organ. I have got to say that it is imaginative! Can one think of any other classical work featuring such a duo?
In the eyes of those lovers of perfection, a work is never finished—a word that for them has no sense—but abandoned....(Paul Valéry)

Re: Henningmusick
Thank you for the kind thought, Jacques! But I must deny any imaginativeness on my part for that combination . . . it was sheer practicality. One of the first friends we made on arriving in Boston was an organist. It was his idea, you might say . . . when he learnt that I am a composer who plays the clarinet, he suggested that I write something which the two of us might play as the prelude for a service.
Cheers,
~Karl

Re: Henningmusick
For them what may takes an interest:
My friend and colleague Luke has kindly uploaded mp3s of the three movements of my Viola Sonata (performed by Dana Huyge, va & Carolyn Ray, pf on 28 Sep 10):
I. Fair Warning
II. Suspension Bridge (In Dave’s Shed)
III. Tango in Boston (Dances with Shades)
Some folks have reported momentary difficulties with downloading, but most (I believe) have succeeded one time or another. Thank you for listening!
Cheers,
~Karl

Re: Henningmusick
Agreed! My own compositional efforts have declined due to other demands (better too busy than not enough), but Audible Books used some of my music in their audio versions of my wife's latest 4 books. Meanwhile, I can enjoy the composition process vicariously through Karl's fine works. More please, Karl.Fergus wrote:I really like that music of yours Karl
