JOHANN STRAUSS: Walzer / RIAS Orchestra, Ferenc Fricsay (1950/1952)
One of the greatest recordings of this repertory, with the one of Clemens Krauss. The technical conditions are very acceptable.

My favourite purchases of 2010, Number 6.
Gustav Mahler
Das Lied von der Erde
Richard Lewis
Maureen Forrester
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Fritz Reiner - conducting.
I had to decide between the Klemperer and the Reiner led performances and as I listen to Reiner's more often than Klemperer I choose the Reiner recording.

That said, Vanska's Sibelius set feels to me a little overrated . When I first got into Sibelius all the guides and messageboards pointed towards Vanska as the real deal, and up to a point it is a very fine cycle. But I do prefer the Colin Davis Boston set on Philips that got me started on Sibelius originally - I come back to it over and over
Re: What are YOU listening to today?
Today, it's concerti I & II, exquisitely done, as were the later ones which I heard first. The attention to orchestral detail is astonishing: these are beautiful performances equal or surpassing the best I've heard. Magnificent piano playing as well, of course.

I agree with you that it does have great energy and I might add dynamic range too, that said my favourite cycle now is the Bernstein/NYPO set of recordings. I haven't listened - at any great length - to the Maazel/VPO cycle and from what I can make out that set sounds really good too.bombasticDarren wrote:I did enjoy it Sean - I thought the performance had great energy so my expectations for the Vanska Beethoven set I am soon receiving are raisedSeán wrote:Did you enjoy the First Symphony Darren? This is a beautiful performance of Roussel's equivalent of the "4 seasons". The woodwinds in the first - winter - movement really shine, I thought. I will definitely return to this again and again.
