This was quite different from the Masses that I usually listen to and it was a bit of a challenge for me but I ultimately prevailed and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was quite a powerful performance!

I forgot to mention that of all Solti recordings this is my favourite. If I had to save one Solti recording this will be it.

this is undoubtedly a great 'Flotty' performance.. I'll have to listen out for that bit..

Gosh, I don't know, Jared. I have twenty different versions of Mahler's Fifth, I tend to just grab a disk to tear me away from Schubert and I suppose that I have been delving into my Mahler Five recordings as a result of my attending the thrilling NSO Mahler Five concert in Dublin a couple of weeks ago.

^^ yes of course, live music can do that for you, can't it... its wonderful when you can get into that emotional 'zone' with a piece where every nuance and colour of tone can say something new to you...

Sometimes one spends very little on a CD or collection of CDs and one is struck by the fact that they contain truly marvellous music. This box set is just one example and it's available at a giveway price on Amazon.com. It's no surprise that the set is on the Membran label I suppose, it is really something special, highly recommended:

This evening I listened to the first two symphonies in this box set and I was hugely impressed with what I heard. Abbado's detailed interpretations and the BPO's sumptuous delivery make this music a real treat, the level of detail is really impressive and the DG engineers capture it beautifully, I feel. I am looking forward to exploring the rest of this set.

Why did it take me so long to get it?

Today I listened to the piece En Languedoc by Deodat de Severac

Here is a composer who was close to Debussy and Albeniz (also friend with Albeniz) in style. Beautiful piano music that I highly recommend to anyone interested in that kind of music.

One of my favorite 'non mainstream' composer and pieces.

Live concert tonight with the Oregon Symphony.

Glinka: Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla
• Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 2
Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 2

I had never heard the Glinka before and found it to be very enjoyable. The performance of Rachmaninoff's 2nd was rock solid, with the tempo lively but not rushed. The brass'es performance was the biggest treat to me. My favorite piece of the night however was the Prokofiev, the symphony provided an excellent accompaniment and Elina's playing had an ethereal quality in the first movement that I think I'll never forget. Truly a wonderful evening!

This is Ezio´s third recording, and the second of the 1750 Prague version. All 3 recordings are quite good, but the new Alan Curtis offering has the most glamourous voices. Recommended.

If you have heard Honeck´s previous Mahler recordings you will know what this is like.
Excellent orchestral performance, and Honeck is a honest and able Mahlerian, but what makes this version to stand out is the phenomenal sound. A Hi-Fi feast, especially in SACD equipment.

Five stars. This release is a perfect example of the influence a great conductor can have on a second-rank orchestra to improve the music-making to first-rank level. Here the Royal Liverpuddlians sound like NY or Boston at their best. A fantastic release, and one to treasure. Many thanks to cliftwood who pointed this great performance out to me.
